Carrying a torch in the battle against cancer

Worcester Editorial 12th Sep, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A RELAY event is about to take place to shine a light of hope in tribute to those whose lives have been touched by cancer.

The Worcester Relay For Life will take place on Saturday (September 12) at the RGS The Grange School, and will see participants light a candle as they walk around the track in turns for 24 hours.

Teams are made up eight to 15 people and each member has been asked to raise as much money as they possibly can for Cancer Research UK in the months leading up to the day.

Fund-raisers have held a range of events from barbecues, quizzes, supermarket bag packs and charity balls along with donations from friends, family and work colleagues.

A special first lap will take place for survivors of the disease to take part in a symbolic trip around the track.

Those completing the full 24 hours will have spaces to put up tents so they can rest and sleep between turns on the course.

Festival-goers who want to cheer on from the sidelines can also enjoy live entertainment from Prism, Worcester Ukulele Club, Worcester Concert Brass, Laura Sankey and more.

They can also visit the stalls, experience Relay’s Got Talent, take part in the Tug of War and design their own candle of hope.

As the sun sets at 8pm the ceremony with the specially made candle of hope bags, decorated with touching messages, are filled with sand and lit with candles to celebrate those who have survived cancer and pay tribute to those who lost the fight against the disease.

Lezley Moran, chair of Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life, said: “Everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer.

“Taking part in Relay For Life is a positive way to be part of your local community and help make a real difference in the fight against the disease.

“The Candle of Hope ceremony is incredibly moving and highlights the real reason everyone joins together for Relay For Life. We believe that united we are stronger than cancer.”
