Carnival to hit the streets once again

Worcester Editorial 30th Jun, 2017 Updated: 30th Jun, 2017   0

WORCESTER’S Carnival is set to make a return this weekend after an absence of more than two decades.

The much-loved event was the highlight of the city’s events calendar in until the 90s but has been absent in recent years until a near revival last year.

Last year’s event was cancelled just four days before it was due to be held but with a fresh team at the helm, this year’s carnival promises to revive the magic of previous events.

The parade of walking groups and floats will take place at 2pm on Saturday and the event will be spread throughout the city centre rather than solely at Pitchcroft as in previous years.

Organisers hope the spread of attractions will boost the atmosphere and help local businesses to benefit.

There will also be a funfair, fun activities and a community stage which will be buzzing with local acts until 8pm.

It will also see the crowning of the first Carnival Queen in over two decades with lots of stalls and attractions.

A number of road closures will be in place for one day including Cornmarket and Croft Road, which will close at 5pm on Friday to allow the fairground to move on to the Cornmarket car park and for floats to be at Croft Road in preparation for the Carnival.

On Saturday, Grandstand Road, Croft Road, Dolday, Deansway, College Street, City Walls Road (northbound), All Saints Road, Charles Street, Pump Street, High Street, The Cross, The Foregate, Foregate Street and Castle Street will be closed between 1pm and 4pm.

New Street and the Cornmarket will be closed to traffic on Saturday from 7am until 11pm.

There will also be a rolling barrier around the pedestrianised areas of the city centre to ensure the safety and enjoyment of those in the parade as well as local visitors and shoppers
