Campaigners hope to inspire second thoughts

A CHURCH congregation is asking people to spare a minute and dig deep to support their clock campaign.

St George’s Church, in Barbourne, is aiming to raise £15,000 to repair the Victorian Clock which can be seen from the A38 route into the city with their Can You Spare Us a Minute campaign.

They launched the project on May 31 to save the clock which stopped working a year ago.

Experts have said the landmark needs a complete overhaul, the clock face re-gilded and an automatic winding and auto regulation system installed.

At present the winding has to be done manually with the clock chamber accessed only by a hoop iron rung ladder which poses a health and safety risk.

The charity group, The Friends of St George’s, are overseeing it and are asking people to sponsor a minute on the clock for £10.

The sponsors are being asked to write 100 words on why that time is special to them, such as a special birth or marriage.

The organisation plan to put together a book about the project including all the stories from the participants.

Michael Silvey, chairman of The Friends of St George’s, said: “We want to open the Just a Minute appeal to everyone who has been connected with St George’s over the years, including those who have moved away, those who are interested in the city’s history and those for whom the church has special memories.”

For more details or to sponsor a minute with a story of no more than 100 words write to the Treasurer, 2 Ogilvy Square, Worcester, WR3 7LU, or e-mail

[email protected] making cheques payable to The Friends of Saint George’s Church.
