Bringing in the Army for a tidy-up

SOLDIERS joined the Mayor of Worcester Coun Jo Hodges for a litter-pick at Worcester’s Astwood Cemetery.

Staff from the Army Recruitment office in Foregate Street volunteered to help out at the site as part of their support for Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean campaign.

The recent storms and high winds have blown some litter into the cemetery and washed some into the brook that flows through the site.

“Our council staff work hard to keep the cemetery looking its best, but the weather sometimes works against us,” Coun Hodges said.

“The kind offer of help came through from the Army at just the right time and it was a great pleasure to join them to pick the litter which had appeared in a couple of parts of the cemetery site.”

Sgt Mark Varndell, senior careers advisor with the Queen’s Royal Hussars, said: “We are committed to giving something back to the communities that we are embedded in and helping out at Astwood Cemetery was an ideal thing to do, as there are several war graves on the site.”
