Bridge ready on the SLR

Worcester Editorial 27th Jul, 2019   0

WALKING and cycling connectivity over one of Worcestershire’s busiest roads is set to take a leap forward.

The installation of Crookbarrow Way footbridge, between the Whittington and Norton roundabouts on Worcester’s A4440 Southern Link Road (SLR), will take place over the next few weeks.

This follows the work last year by Worcestershire County Council to extend the railway bridge and dual this section of road and is part of the wider scheme to fully dual the Southern Link Road between the M5 and Powick Roundabout.

The bridge, once fully complete, will be suitable for pedestrians, mobility scooters, bikes and those on horseback.

It will provide a vital link between the communities of St Peters and Norton as well as supporting connectivity between the city centre and the new Worcestershire Parkway Station, currently under construction just off M5 Junction 7.

Coun Ken Pollock, cabinet member for Economy and Infrastructure, said: “The installation of this bridge is an important part of the work taking place on the Southern Link Road so please bear with us during the forthcoming road and lane closures.

“For those who have seen the bridge being constructed on the side of the road, it really is an impressive structure.

“This is the first of four crossings over the SLR that are suitable for walking and cycling to be installed. When the wider scheme is complete, the Crookbarrow Way Footbridge will be complemented by the Broomhall Way Footbridge, an underpass near the Ketch roundabout and a bridge over Hams Way near the Powick roundabout. This improved connectivity is great news for local communities and for those who choose alternatives to traveling by car.”

To allow the bridge installation works to take place, road and lane closures between Whittington and Norton roundabouts will need to be in place on the following dates:

7pm on Saturday, July 27 to 7pm on Sunday, July 27 – Full closure in both directions

7pm on Saturday, August 3 to 7pm on Sunday, August 4 – Full closure in both directions

7pm on Saturday, August 10 to 7pm on Sunday, August 11 – Full closure in both directions

These road closures may vary if works are affected by bad weather, for example high winds. The road will be opened as soon as possible on each of the Sundays.

During the two weeks in between the closures, to support the works, the west bound (downhill) carriageway will be fully closed. All traffic will therefore use the current eastbound (uphill) carriageway with two of the three lanes for westbound traffic (down the hill) and one lane for eastbound traffic (up the hill). These temporary changes will be fully signed and clearly marked.

Once the bridge is installed, further work is needed before the bridge becomes operational. Access to the newly installed bridge on both sides needs to be built which includes construction of an access ramp.
