Brave Myles takes steps to prove his courage

A BRAVE teenager who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at just six-years-old was among more than 40 brave fund-raisers took to hot coals for a county childhood cancer charity.

Myles Broadbent, who is now 13, was among the brave ‘soles’ who walked barefoot across 500-degree coals to raise money for the Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust (GKCCT).

The event took place at Aztec in Upton Warren on October 15 with the event being sponsored by Green Breeze Ambient.

Fund-raisers have raised more than £4,000 which will directly go back into the services and support the charity offers oncology families.

Along with other local oncology families one of the amazing fund-raisers who joined the incredible challenge was Myles, who in 2014 was told the devasting news he had one of the most aggressive forms of leukaemia.

Myles began his gruelling treatment regime which included around 150 nights in Birmingham Children’s Hospital, surgery to insert and remove a central venous line into a valve near his heart, countless blood and platelet transfusions, x-rays, MRI and CT scans, lumber punctures, injections, cannulas and bone marrow aspirates.

He lost all of his hair not once but twice and received chemotherapy orally, via infusion and injection. He lost the ability to walk, leaving him wheelchair bound before eventually regaining the strength to walk again.

In October 2017 Myles finally finished a demanding and tiring three and a half years of treatment and rang the end of treatment bell at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

To mark the celebration, Myles himself raised £148 for the GKCCT.

Emma Williams, office and project manager for the GKCCT said: “We have been absolutely blown away by the support from our fund-raisers for our first ever fire walk.

“The event was just amazing, fantastic atmosphere and lots of support for everyone taking part.

“We were delighted to have Myles and his family attend and help him take on this challenge and we hope this will be an experience he never forgets,” she added.
