Boost for stars of tomorrow

TWO of the city’s brightest prospects in sport have received a financial boost towards their promising careers.

Jenny Nesbitt, who shot to fame in September when she beat Paula Radcliffe to win the inaugural Worcester City 10k, along with talented tennis player Kate Horsburgh have been handed £300 each.

The money, which has been donated by Sport Worcester, will go towards the duo’s training, competition and equipment costs.

And Jenny said the grant would make a big difference as she looks to put it towards funding her trips to Mansfield for the National XC relays and Bristol for the Midland Ladies League.

The Barbourne resident, who set a UK u20 best time for 2014, said the Talented Individual Athlete Award would also go along way to helping her achieve her ambition of gaining her first GB vest.

“Having the support from Sport Worcester will enable me to compete further afield in higher calibre races as I will be able to fund the transport needed to get there,” she said.

“This won’t only provide me with the opportunity to compete against the best in the UK, but also allows me to gather valuable experiences, helping me to achieve my dreams.”

The second recipient of the award is tennis ace Kate Horsburgh, who has enjoyed success in regional and national championships.

The 14-year-old, who has been playing tennis since the age of five, is a member of the Worcester Lawn Tennis Club and trains five days a week, including two fitness sessions before school, and three coaching sessions after school.

Kate added: “My aim is to become the best tennis player that I can be – so I need to do a lot of training and play in the right standard of competition.

“Travelling most weeks in the summer to competitions all over the country is expensive, so I really appreciate the financial support that I have received from Sport Worcester.”
