Bookworms are handed honours

Worcester Editorial 28th Oct, 2016   0

YOUNG bookworms from across the city received special medals and certificates for completing a summer reading challenge.

More than 200 children were handed the honours during a Roald Dahl themed ceremony at The Hive, where children and parents were encouraged to dress up as their favourite character to celebrate the children who took part in The Big Read, Summer Reading Challenge 2016.

Run by The Reading Agency, 479 children aged four to 12 at The Hive alone completed the county challenge to read six books over the summer.

Coun Lucy Hodgson, cabinet member for Localism and Communities and Kathy Kirk took it in turns to present the medals.

Coun Hodgson said: “I was thrilled to be asked to present the Summer Reading Challenge medals again this year.

“The children are so excited and so pleased with themselves, and rightly so. It is a great initiative, brings even more fun to reading and very importantly keeps children reading during the long school break of the summer holidays.

“The scheme always achieves great results in Worcestershire as our library staff are really committed to it and work enormously hard to promote the challenge and encourage the children taking part to get as much out of it as possible”.

Everyone who has taken part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is being encouraged to visit www.thehiveworcester.org to complete The Reading Agency’s online survey.
