Bingo thief ordered to pay back cash

Worcester Editorial 2nd Sep, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016

A RONKSWOOD woman who took the purse of a fellow bingo player has been ordered to pay back all the money she stole.

Tracy Seery, of Lichfield Avenue, committed the offence at Gala Bingo on the afternoon of August 11 when she stole £132 belonging to Emily Bishop.

The pair were in the Foregate Street hall when Mrs Bishop went outside to smoke a cigarette, but left her bag on the chair, and when she came back her purse had been taken from inside, Worcester Magistrates Court heard last Friday (August 29).

The victim told members of staff who searched the premises and found the item – with no money left in it – dumped in the bin in the ladies toilet, the court was also told.

CCTV was used to establish what had happened and subsequently police were called to the site and Seery was arrested.

Seery was questioned about the offence but originally denied taking the purse and said it was her in the footage but she had not stolen the money.

She pleaded guilty to magistrates on Friday and was ordered to pay compensation of £132 and £85 court costs.

Defending solicitor Barry Newton said: “She came into my office earlier this week in rather a distressed state.

“This is wholly out of character for her. She has a number of medical issues and the medication prescribed doesn’t mix well with alcohol and on this particular day she had a couple of drinks.

“She accepts this happened but had little memory of events.

“It’s a very sad situation she finds herself in and I think you will agree with me today when I say you won’t be seeing her before the courts again.”
