THE COUPLE who run a popular toy store in Worcester have spoken of their shock at seeing their business selected as one of the best small shops in the country.

Wise Owl Toys have made the top 20 shortlist of the Best Small Shops Competition after owners Mark and Heather Stewart’s application impressed the judges.

The pair, who opened their shop on Charles Street 15 years ago, will head to the House of Commons today (Wednesday) for the awards ceremony.

Mr Stewart, who also runs classes for people looking to learn how to write, said Worcester MP Robin Walker suggested he entered the competition, but he admitted he did expect to be selected.

“I was somewhat flabbergasted and then slightly scared,” he said. “We’ve had our left sided part of the business going for 20 years and we have been in our current shop for just over 15 years, so to get that sort of recognition is terrific.

“But I am aware that there are 19 other competitors so we’ll see.

“I am not expecting to win, but it will be a great day out.”
