Armed forces kitted out for Military Matchday

Worcester Editorial 26th Jan, 2017   0

CITY residents are being invited to Worcester Warriors Rugby Club’s action packed family fun ‘Military Matchday’.

Taking place on Saturday, February 18 when Warriors take on Exeter Chiefs in the Aviva Premiership at Sixways Stadium, the Military Matchday will offer fans the chance to see a wide range of army kit and equipment.

The Army in the West Midlands will also be out in force, where fans can speak to soldiers from units including the Mercian Regiment, 11th Signal and West Midlands Brigade and 104 Regiment Royal Artillery.

There will also be a Warrior armoured fighting vehicle on display and during the match, military bands will entertain the fans, as well as the Mercian Regiment’s famous mascot, Private Derby, a pedigree Swaledale ram.

Representatives from Worcester Warriors and the Army in the West Midlands will also sign the Armed Forces Covenant, joining many businesses and organisations from across the region to have done so in the last few years.

Lt. Col. Richard Jones, of the 11th Signal and West Midlands Brigade, said: “The Military Matchday is designed to show the close relationship between the Worcester Warriors and Valkyries and the military in the Midlands.

“We’ll be there to sign the covenant with the Sixways teams and look forward to an enduring and mutually supportive relationship. It’s not just about the matchday, it also heralds the start of a long-term partnership between the club and the Brigade.”

Leyton Williams, Warriors’ head of partnerships, said: “We’re delighted to welcome the Mercian Regiment and Army West Midlands to Sixways to promote the great work they do. They are a key part of the local community.”
