Appeal launched to support music at Worcester Cathedral

WORCESTER  Cathedral has launched an appeal asking for help in supporting music.

The Cathedral said it is challenging to raise enough funds each year to maintain the choirs, organs and choral tradition.

Director of Music at Worcester Cathedral, Samuel Hudson, said: “No two years are ever the same in a cathedral music department, and as we approach September, there is always a sense of renewal and fresh beginnings.

“This year is no different. We look forward to welcoming new choristers as they begin their musical journey, new choral and organ scholars eager to develop their skills, and often new lay clerks who will contribute to our centuries-old tradition.”

This year, the boy and girl choristers join forces to form a combined treble line.

Mr Hudson added: “We are also continuing to provide musical opportunities for singers of all ages from the local area through our Voluntary Choir, Youth Choir, and Chamber Choir. “For the first time, we are introducing regular opportunities for professional sopranos to contribute to the life of the Cathedral.

“There is a nationwide gap in support for female sopranos pursuing careers in choral music, and Worcester has lacked a regular platform for them to participate.

“By creating new pathways, we aim to support talented young female singers in a professional environment, helping them grow and thrive.”
