Anti-Brexit march hailed a success

Worcester Editorial 27th Mar, 2019   0

THE CHAIRMAN of a leading anti-Brexit group has vowed not to have a Brexit ‘fudge’ forced on people after 12 coaches of protestors headed for the capital to join the Put it to the People March.

Worcestershire for Europe chair Stuart Thomson made the vow after an estimated million people took to the streets of London on Saturday to voice their opposition to the country’s proposed exit from the EU.

The UK will not leave the EU as planned on Friday after the European Union granted an extension to Prime Minister Theresa May.

However, despite the extension, it is unclear whether Mrs May will succeed in getting her deal passed by Parliament which voted to approve votes on a series of alternatives to the current deal which are expected to be debated today (Wednesday).

Campaigners from across the county were among those in London to demand a vote on Mrs May’s withdrawal agreement and Mr Thomson hailed the event as the ‘biggest protest in this country’.

“The people would not have voted for a Brexit fudge in 2016 and we refuse to have it forced upon us now,” he said.

“We will continue to publicise all the opportunities and benefits of our EU membership, which cannot just be simply tossed aside because of a deeply flawed vote.”

He added: “Among our party we had young and old marchers from all political parties and none, some regretful Leave voters and many who overcame huge challenges such as illness or disability to have their voice heard.

“It was heartening to have many first-time protesters in the group, as more and more people wake up to the fact that Brexit is heading for disaster. We are all patriots and want the best for a united UK and Mrs May’s Brexit simply will not do.”

A campaign highlighting comments made by prominent Brexit-backers has also reached Worcester.

Former Brexit Secretary David Davis’ quote ‘If a democracy cannot change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy’ has been depicted as a tweet on a billboard on Bromyard Road.

The advertising billboard is the latest from the cloak and dagger anti-Brexit campaign group Led By Donkeys who have hit the headlines by raising past comments, tweets and statements made by prominent Brexit voices such as Mr Davis, Nigel Farage and more.

The Led By Donkeys group was set up by four friends after a discussion in the pub.
