Anti-Brexit billboard appears as city groups attend London march

Worcester Editorial 23rd Mar, 2019   0

A BILLBOARD campaign highlighting comments made by prominent Brexit-backers has reached Worcester as members of pro-EU group Worcestershire for Europe group prepare to march in the capital.

Former Brexit Secretary David Davis’s quote ‘If a democracy cannot change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy’ has been depicted as a tweet on a billboard on Bromyard Road.

The advertising billboard is the latest from the cloak and dagger anti-Brexit campaign group Led By Donkeys who have hit the headlines by raising past comments, tweets and statements made by prominent Brexit voices such as Mr Davis, Nigel Farage and more.

The Led By Donkeys group was set up by four friends after a discussion in the pub around New Year.

Members of Worcestershire for Europe welcomed the arrival of the new billboard and group chair Stuart Thomson said: “The Davis quote is so apt at a time, three ears after the vote, when the country knows so much more about the consequences of Brexit than we did in 2016, it is only to be expected many have changed their minds.

“That is why we will be marching in London today (Saturday) with a million plus others for a People’s Vote on May’s deal.

“Demand for coach seats has been high but soared after our Prime Minister’s divisive statement and we have just booked our twelfth coach.

“What is particularly pleasing is we are being joined by Leave voters who feel they were deceived in ‘16 and want the opportunity to have an informed vote on the deal,” he added.

Members of Worcester Students’ Union will also be in the capital to take part in the demonstration asking for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.

A coach full of students from the University of Worcester are expected to journey to the capital in an effort organised by the Students’ Union.

They will join fellow students from Unions affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS) on the ‘Put it to the People March’. Those involved will gather at midday at Hyde park and walk to the Houses of Parliament.

Worcester Students’ Union officially supports the campaign for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal following a vote from the student body. The Union has since been encouraging students to write to their MPs and voice their concerns.

Euan Morrison, Vice President of the Worcester Students’ Union, who has led the campaign at Worcester, said the Students’ Union was concerned about the effect of Brexit on academic mobility, such as the Erasmus+ scheme, and the consequent threat to the opportunities for students to study, work, volunteer, teach and train across Europe. He also said there was concern over the uncertainty for EU students and how they will be affected.

“I’m hoping this will show the strength of feeling, not just amongst students but in the country, that the path that we’re being taken down isn’t the best option,” he said.

“I think the chaos and uncertainty which had been demonstrated and shown over the last days, weeks, months, years has really highlighted to students the very real impact that Brexit will have on our futures.

“I think generally students and young people don’t see any benefits of the current path that’s been taken and see that it’s actually going to have a huge impact on their future opportunities. That’s why a lot of students are passionately supporting a People’s Vote, because what was promised in the 2016 Referendum hasn’t been delivered, indeed we know now that it’s not possible and so it’s only right that we should reconsider our options in the form of a Peoples Vote.

“It’s also important to note the large volume of young people who were unable at the time of the Referendum to participate in the democratic process.”
