An effort to be proud of as awards event goes on

ORGANISERS of the Best of Worcester Awards were rewarded for their belief ‘the show must go on’ with a unique presentation ceremony outside the Guildhall.

The original celebratory presentations in April for this year’s awards was axed because of Coronavirus restrictions.

However with a spirit and determination to honour Worcester’s community heroes, a special presentation ceremony was held on Saturday (September 12).

With 15 minutes separating each presentation, award winners arrived – many with proud family and friends – to receive their plaques, in a safe and secure environment.

Five of this year’s awards were made in March by the then Mayor Coun Allah Ditta. Four further awards were the result of nominations from the public and were chosen by a panel of judges.

Coun Ditta was on hand to present the awards alongside Coun Alan Amos and Rev Andy Todd of St Stephen’s Church, Barbourne which successfully obtained a lottery grant to sponsor this year’s awards.

Keith Slater, whose company Community Boost produced the event, said: “These awards are increasingly important as the voluntary sector continues to play an even more important role in all our lives as a result of the pandemic.

“I think it crucial not just we say thank you to many people but many of the key people and key institutions in the city are here to give their thanks too. The presence of city councillors and the church went a long way to letting people know how valued their work is.”

Coun Amos, who launched the first Best of Worcester Awards in 2015 as Mayor of Worcester, said: “It is very inspiring we have continued with this annual tradition and are now on to its fourth event.

“We have adapted it over the years and last year we included a category for award-wining school musicians. This year, I’m very proud that we are the first-ever awards event in Worcester to specifically recognise and reward the contribution that the gay (LGBT) community and the Polish community make to life in Worcester.

“I am very confident this event will continue to go from strength to strength, reaching out to every individual, group and community in the city.”
