Amazon to stop accepting UK-issued Visa credit cards

Worcester Editorial 17th Nov, 2021   0

AMAZON has revealed it will stop accepting payments made with UK-issued Visa credit cards in January, blaming the cost of processing the payments.

In an e-mail to customers this morning (Wednesday), the company blamed Visa’s charges for handling such transactions for the move which will come into effect on January 19.

Visa debit cards will be unaffected as will other credit cards including Mastercard and American Express and Amazon acknowledged the move would be ‘inconvenient’ for some customers.

Payments on cards attract a range of fees and the company has not revealed exactly which one it has taken issue with.

In response Visa said it was ‘very disappointed’ Amazon was threatening to ‘restrict consumer choice’.

“When consumer choice is limited, nobody wins. We have a longstanding relationship with Amazon, and we continue to work toward a resolution, so our cardholders can use their preferred Visa credit cards at Amazon UK without Amazon-imposed restrictions come January 2022.”
