THE A449 in Worcester has fully re-opened following yesterday’s two lorry crash which saw one become consumed by flames.

Emergency services were called to the A449 northbound, between the B4850 Blackpole Road, at about 11.30am yesterday (Tuesday).

The A449 and the A4536, between the Blackpole Island and J6 of the M5, remained closed for several hours whilst recovery of the lorries took place.

Following the crash, one of the lorries, which was carrying wood chips, was totally consumed by the fire.

The driver of that lorry was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with chest injuries.

The other driver was uninjured and was able to decouple the cab from the trailer before the fire took hold.

Over night resurfacing work took place to repair the damaged road and it is now full reopen in both directions.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “The collision caused a fire that has totally consumed one of the lorries, which was carrying wood chips.

“The driver of that lorry, a man, suffered chest injuries from the seatbelt and steering wheel and was conveyed to Worcestershire Royal Hospital. The other driver was uninjured and was able to decouple the cab from the trailer before the fire took hold.”
