A 'Wheely' grand way to support vital Worcester transport charity

A £1,000 DONATION from leading eye-health clinic Newmedica Worcester has helped to keep a much-needed transport charity driving forward.

Worcester Wheels provides vital community transport services for people who find it difficult to access other forms of transport.

The charity aims to always be there for anyone needing transport to medical appointments, hospital appointments or visiting, journeys to day centres, lunch clubs, shopping trips, or going to see relatives and friends.

Dormston Cook, business manager at the charity, said: “Donations such as this are the lifeblood of our charity, helping to keep our vehicles on the road and assisting so many people in our community.

“As well as the practical means of getting people to appointments, we also alleviate isolation for many.

“People think that isolation happens to those living in the country, but that isn’t the case. People rely on us for human interaction because they might not see anyone else for the week.

“We are the ‘real’ internet – connecting people with their interests, retaining their connection with their communities and friends, bringing people together.”

Staff at the charity were presented with the cheque by Josh Raden, operational director at Newmedica Worcester.

Josh said: “There are many people who really do rely on the services that Worcester Wheels provides. I know a number of our patients use the service, and not having access to its support would really impact their quality of life.

“The team here feel strongly about contributing to our community. Most of our staff are local people, so they want to help where they can.

“We know we’re lucky to have organisations such as Worcester Wheels here and we’re looking forward to working with them for years to come.”

The Newmedica Worcester eye-health clinic and surgical centre operates from the Berkeley Business Park and provides services for NHS and private patients.

With the pandemic having caused a backlog of surgery for eye operations and other procedures on the NHS, Newmedica Worcester is assisting the NHS with its waiting lists.
