A bank holiday for the ages...

Worcester Editorial 24th Aug, 2019   0

VISITORS to The Commandery can step back 800 years to experience medieval celebrations and discover what life was like during the Middle Ages at one of Worcester’s oldest buildings this Bank Holiday weekend.

The joyful medieval celebrations on Sunday (August 25) and Monday (August 26) from 10am to 5pm will bring together two days of activities.

Visitors can explore a living history camp with Amicorum re-enactors, see a traditional medieval gun demonstration, try their hand at archery, discover the surgical secrets of the day and enjoy traditional crafts in the Grade I listed building which dates back to the 11th century.

There will be opportunities to meet medieval characters including archers, knights and traders as well as trying out some archery of their own and learning more about the guns in a firing demonstration.

Visitors will also be given an insight into the medical practices of the day, including surgical equipment and how herbs and plants were used for medicine.

The Commandery’s history dates back to its time as a monastic hospital from 1085, when tradition has it the building was founded as a hospital by Saint Wulfstan, the then Bishop of Worcester.

The good folk of The Commandery will be ready to take visitors back to a time when the beautiful historic building housed medieval monks and miracles, with opportunities to discover its fascinating history through talks on the monastic hospital.

There will also be magnificent artefacts to see including the Medieval Painted Chamber, a room covered in monastic wall paintings of saints and martyrs, and some amazing archaeology on display.

Commandery marketing officer, Robyn Rooney, said: “We are lucky to have nearly a thousand years of stories to tell at The Commandery, and our bank holiday weekend will be an exciting step back in time to the earliest period of this building’s amazing history.

“We have a brilliant variety of activities happening over the bank holiday, from archery to talks, so the celebrations will capture the imaginations of children and adults alike.”

On Saturday (August 24) there will be medieval-inspired talks and tours happening for visitors to learn the history of one of Worcester’s oldest buildings.
