£1.5million revamp for Angel Place backed by planning chiefs

A MAJOR £1.5million revamp of Angel Place is set to go ahead after Crowngate chiefs received the green light from city planning chiefs.

Crowngate owners The Crown Estate secured planning permission from Worcester City Council’s planning committee at a meeting on Thursday, August 24.

The regeneration of the site, part of Friary Walk, will ensure the creation of an exciting, modern shopping environment and rejuvenated public space.

Central to the regeneration plan is the refurbishment of the façade and main entrance to Friary Walk, which is already home to retailers including New Look, Mothercare and Vision Express.

The frontage of Angel Place will be upgraded in a traditional style in keeping with the surrounding architecture.

Crowngate chiefs claim the approved plans will complete the regeneration of Angel Place as a market place and public square and enhance the character and appearance of the Historic City Conservation Area.

As part of the revamp, a more flexible range of uses for the units within Friary Walk will be offered.

The Crown Estate hope the renovation will encourage a mix of new businesses, retailers and restaurants to come to the city centre.

Nicole Campbell, asset manager at The Crown Estate, said: “We are pleased to have secured consent for this important regeneration project.

“It is a key part of our long-term vision to ensure Crowngate remains a leading shopping destination and will also help to preserve the character of the historic city.

“The regeneration will attract a more diverse mix of occupiers, enhancing what is already on offer at Friary Walk, as well as creating new job opportunities for the city of Worcester.”

Crowngate Shopping Centre launched the pollinator garden late last year and plans are afoot to launch a beehive project, to promote biodiversity in the heart of the historic city.

The Angel Place regeneration works are expected to kick off in early 2018.
