Is Virtual Reality Going to Overtake Mobile Gaming?

Worcester Editorial 19th Jul, 2022   0

Mobile gaming is one of the most popular ways for gamers to play their favorite video games, mainly due to how accessible and easy it is to play on your mobile phones. In this article, we’ll be exploring whether virtual reality could be the next step for gaming and the latest developments that’ll make gaming more immersive for gamers.

Virtual reality might not be for everyone right now. Still, with the development of the metaverse, it’s likely that all gamers, whether they play Fortnite with their friend or just like to play mobile blackjack in the evening, will soon be using some kind of virtual reality technology.

What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality is a relatively new technology in the gaming space but has become more popular in recent years as the headsets have become more user-friendly and affordable. They allow you to immerse yourself in the gaming environment, allowing you to interact with the virtual world around you in ways that weren’t possible before.

Reality Labs is the frontrunner regarding virtual reality technology, and was developed first by the in-house team and then by the team at Meta (formerly known as Facebook) following their acquisition. There are plenty of other companies now in the virtual reality space, but the Oculus devices created by Reality Labs were among the very first.

These devices use sensors and built-in measuring instruments to track your head and hand movements to give you a real experience of what it’s like inside the gaming world. You can look around within the games just as you can in the real world and use the hand devices to reach out to items, using the attached buttons to interact with them.

How could VR overtake mobile gaming?

It’s entirely possible that virtual reality could overtake mobile gaming, but when we look at these two things, we should see them as separate entities. Instead, we should look at them as things that should, and likely will, work together given that mobile gaming may soon better incorporate virtual reality into the mobile gaming experience.

That being said, there are a few key ways in which virtual reality could take over from mobile gaming as the go-to platform for gamers.

VR is much more immersive than mobile gaming

Virtual reality allows gamers to be placed within the world of the game, as opposed to being somebody looking in. This ability to put the player into a living breathing world allows for better engagement and helps the player become invested in the story and the people there.

VR provides an additional level of accessibility

If you want to play a first-person shooter game on your phone, you’ll need to have reasonably good dexterity in order to aim and shoot accurately. With VR, all you need to do is point your head in the direction of your target and pull the trigger. It’s that simple.

VR is becoming increasingly affordable

The VR space is big money, with lots of incoming investment. As the technology develops and more companies enter the market, we’d expect the systems to become much cheaper, as is beginning to be the case. Currently, the latest Oculus device costs £299, which is far cheaper than previous models. In comparison, a mobile device that’s optimized for gaming can cost, at the higher end, four times as much.

Why is mobile gaming currently leading the race?

Mobile gaming is the go-to way of playing for a variety of reasons, with the main one being how convenient it is for most people. These days, most people have a mobile device and can therefore use the app store to download almost any game. In addition, we’re seeing more and more console games have mobile-friendly versions created specifically for this market.

Convenience is also a huge factor to consider when looking at why mobile gaming is as popular as it is, with the ability to play regardless of the time or place meaning you can play when it suits you. You can usually use your existing mobile phone to join a game – all you really need to have is a stable internet connection so you can connect to the servers.

There are millions of people around the world who own a smartphone or tablet, which means that there is a large potential audience for mobile game developers to target. This market represents so many people, and it is, therefore, no surprise that mobile gamers are seen as a vital market for any developer looking to gain traction in the gaming industry.
