STUDENTS from Heart of Worcestershire (HoW) College, will perform ‘The Crucible’, writes Toby Almond.

The play, written in 1953 by Arthur Miller, will be staged at the Spires Theatre, Deansway in Worcester on Wednesday and Thursday, January 21 and 22.

The story is set during the Salem witch trials of 1692, and is thought-provoking drama that explores the themes of hysteria, morality and the consequences of mass paranoia.

It follows the story of a small puritan community in Massachusetts that descends into chaos when a group of young girls accuse several villagers of witchcraft.

Miller wrote the play as an allegory for McCarthyism in the United States, where the government persecuted people accused of being communist.

Adam Neal, Curriculum Manager for the Arts, said: “The Crucible is such a powerful play and we’re so excited to be showcasing the students’ development through this drama.

“An intense show that really highlights the student’s skills, it promises two evenings that reinforce the level of talent of our students – they should all be really proud of themselves.”
