A NEW place to sit and remember the fallen in Worcester has its own story to tell.
The Worcester Branch of the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association held a rededication ceremony for a Worcestershire regimental malaya memorial bench on Saturday April 18 in Gheluvelt Park.
It follows the bench being rescued from The National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire.
Several years ago, the arboretum stopped associations and other groups maintaining their benches and memorials, resulting in them falling into disrepair.
The WFRA was given two options – either to enter into a costly 20-year maintenance scheme or collect the bench and bring it to Worcester.
They took the second option and on the bench arriving in the city, it was given a much-needed revamp with the help of Worcester Men’s Shed.
They fitted plastic slats to replace the rotten wood, touched up the lettering on the panels, and cleaned and refitted the brass plaques.
A ‘Go Fund Me’ page was set up to meet the cost of the project.
