New Worcester group the Shakespeare Circle set to celebrate the Bard's work

A NEW group is launching in Worcester to help people explore the works of William Shakespeare through play, interaction and discussion.

The Shakespeare Circle at The Hive launches on April 21 from 6.30pm to 8pm aligning with the celebrations of the playwright’s birthday week.

The new monthly workshop responds directly to the strong local appetite for Shakespeare-inspired activities, after earlier events at The Hive attracted large audiences and lively debate.

Designed for both long-time Shakespeare lovers and those who are simply curious, the sessions will bring people together through informal conversation and practical, accessible drama exercises. The Circle is led by two University of Worcester Shakespeare enthusiasts.

Tom Mandall, academic liaison librarian at the University of Worcester, said: “Each month we’ll look at a different play, and whether it’s one of your favourites, completely new to you, or somewhere in between, you’re invited to join us.”

Margaret Tildesley, senior lecturer at the University of Worcester, continued: “Shakespeare is something to be playful with. Reading, in its broadest sense, can involve the whole body, it invites movement, voice, and a spirit of lively action. In the circle we will bring the text to life.”

The first session will explore a Midsummer Night’s Dream, following its recent success in an earlier Hive event where academics debated their favourite Shakespeare plays and audiences voted for the winner.

Open to anyone aged 16 and over, the Circle welcomes participants with any level of Shakespeare knowledge.

Other upcoming sessions including Romeo and Juliet on Tuesday May 12 and Measure for Measure on Tuesday June 16.

Spaces are limited and advance booking is essential via the Hive website.
