RGS WORCESTER celebrated an outstanding victory in the annual ‘Superball’ Netball fixture, against King’s School winning 43-33 in a spectacular event held at the University of Worcester Arena on Saturday evening.
Playing in front of a sell-out crowd of 1,600 spectators, the RGS Worcester 1st VII delivered a composed and determined performance to secure the University of Worcester Superball trophy, marking an impressive eight wins in ten for RGS since the event was first played at the Arena in 2014.
The evening began with an exciting contest between the 2nd VII teams, with RGS Worcester narrowly edging a closely fought match 17-16.
Beyond the competitive fixtures, the event showcased a true celebration of girls’ sport and community.
Pupils from the Prep Schools of both RGS Worcester and King’s School came together for a Netball coaching session led by players from the Birmingham Panthers Netball Super League team and coaches from Super Sports.
This was followed by specially choreographed dance performances from pupils of both Senior Schools, entertaining the crowd ahead of the main event and during the intervals.
The RGS Worcester team took an early lead, only to be pegged back by the King’s team as both teams settled into the contest.
At half-time, RGS Worcester held a 19-15 lead, with the match finely balanced. Under the guidance of Head of Netball, Miss Rebecca Gwilliam, the RGS team entered the second half with renewed focus and determination.
In the final two quarters, RGS Worcester demonstrated exceptional athleticism, composure and teamwork, capitalising on key turnovers and converting opportunities with precision. As the final whistle sounded, RGS had extended their advantage to seal a 43–33 victory, prompting a standing ovation from over 860 RGS supporters in attendance.
The celebrations reached their peak as Captain Eden Williamson lifted the Superball trophy, marking a memorable end to a highly successful Netball season.
Headmaster, Mr John Pitt, said: “What an incredible match and what an experience for the players of both teams to play in front of a large audience in this superb venue.
“Thank you to Professor Green and the University team here, and to everyone who joined us both in the Arena and online through the live stream.
“It was fantastic to see so many people cheering on the girls in what was a high-quality match played by two very talented teams.”
The Player of the Match for RGS Worcester was Annika Potter, recognising her outstanding performance as Goal Defence. For King’s School Lauren Harris was chosen.
