RESIDENTS are being invited to have their say on the look of Worcester’s shops.
Worcester City Council is asking people to give their views on a new policy document designed to protect the attractive appearance of the city’s shopping and commercial areas.
The council has drawn up a Supplementary Planning Document, which sets out design guidance aimed at preserving traditional shop fronts in the city and ensuring that, when stores and other businesses do want to change their frontages, the result is a high-quality design.
The overall aim of the draft SPD is to ensure that, at a time when the traditional high street is facing more competition from online retail than ever before, Worcester’s shopping areas continue to be attractive to shoppers and visitors.
The draft SPD is now the subject of a public consultation and people can give their views on it at www.worcester.gov.uk/voiceit.
Coun Hannah Cooper, vice chair of the place and economic development committee, said: “Shop fronts are a very important part of the commercial centres across Worcester, and our aim with this draft planning document is to ensure they remain vibrant, attractive, and welcoming.
“By setting clear, high-quality design principles, we can support local businesses while protecting Worcester’s unique character for years to come.
“I encourage everyone with an interest in preserving the special character of Worcester’s retail and commercial centres, and the city’s heritage, to take part in this consultation at www.worcester.gov.uk/voiceit.”
The deadline for taking part in the consultation is Friday December 19.
