Former Worcester councillor dies aged 77

FORMER Worcester City Councillor Chris Cawthorne has died at the age of 77.

Chris, who had previously worked for the probation service and had also been director of Asha Women’s Centre, was first elected to the city council for Labour in 2012 with a majority of 500. She served for nine years until stepping down in May 2021.

Representing the St John’s ward (the boundaries of which have since changed), she worked alongside Coun Matt Lamb and Coun Richard Udall.

She was a member of the city council’s licensing and environmental health committee and planning committee.

Chris was active in many community organisations, including the Friends of Cripplegate Park (which she chaired), Maggs, Worcester YMCA, Worcester Play Council, Worcester Citizen’s Advice Bureau and the Hopmarket Charity.

She was due to step down from the council in 2020 but stayed for an additional 12 months when the elections that year were cancelled due to Covid. She received many warm tributes when she attended her final full council meeting online in March 2021.
