COMMUNTIY centres in Worcester will soon be looking greener thanks to a funding boost.
Worcester City Council is investing a further £200,000 in community projects as part of its Worcester Town Investment Plan.
Supported by £19.6million of government funding, the plan was developed four years ago by the city council and supported by a group of local stakeholders, who formed the Town Deal Board.
The next step will result in the installation of solar panels and energy efficiency measures at community centres across the city, including Horizon in the Fort Royal area, Ronkswood in Nunnery ward, the Green Hub in Dines Green and the KGV Hub at Brickfields.
In addition, internal alterations will be made at Warndon Community Hub and The Tolly Hub in Rainbow Hill to improve privacy for confidential consultations.
A financial contribution will also be made towards the development of the new St Peter’s Village Hall.
The money is available thanks to unspent contingency funds budgeted for the construction of the Building Block 2 training centre in Dines Green, which was completed and opened earlier this year.
So far, in addition to Building Block 2, the plan has funded improvements to reception and consultation areas in community centres, and the introduction of the Beryl Bikes scheme.
It has also contributed to the development of Kepax Bridge and enhancements to walking and cycling routes across the city – including links from the canal towpath to Sixways, Diglis, Cherry Orchard, St Peter’s, and Ronkswood.
Council leader Coun Lynn Denham said: “The Worcester Town Investment Plan continues to make a real difference to our city.
“This latest investment will enhance our community centres – many of which serve residents in some of our most disadvantaged areas – by making them more sustainable and affordable to run through energy efficiency upgrades.
“Thanks to careful management of the Building Block 2 project, we’ve been able to reinvest in further improvements that benefit both our facilities and the people who rely on them.
“From green infrastructure to leisure and cultural attractions and training facilities, the plan is delivering real value and opportunity across Worcester.”
