Maggs urges public support as temperatures soar across Worcester and Malvern

WITH temperatures set to rise above 30°C in the coming days, homelessnes charity Maggs is urging the public to be aware of the serious risks that extreme heat poses to people experiencing homelessness.

While summer may be enjoyable for many, for those living on the streets, soaring temperatures can be just as life-threatening as the cold.

These dangers have led to the activation of hot severe weather emergency protocol – a safeguarding measure designed to protect rough sleepers during periods of extreme heat.

Outreach teams will be carrying out daily welfare checks, distributing bottled water, suncream, and light clothing, and offering access to shaded or indoor spaces where possible.

Staff will also be supporting individuals with advice on how to stay safe in the heat and signposting to additional services.

Claire Hooper, service lead for Worcester and South Worcestershire at Maggs, said: “There’s a misconception that hot weather is somehow easier for those sleeping rough — but the truth is, it can be just as dangerous as freezing conditions.

“People often don’t have access to water, shade, or sun protection, and this can lead to serious health issues very quickly.

“The emergency allows us to respond rapidly and provide immediate care, but we rely heavily on the generosity and awareness of the public to help us reach everyone who needs it.”

Maggs is asking for support from the community during this time.

Donations of bottled water, suncream, light clothing and hats are hugely appreciated and can be dropped off at the Maggs Clothing Project at The Old Glove Factory in Worcester.

Financial contributions can also be made online via www.maggsdaycentre.co.uk/donate to help sustain outreach efforts and provide essential supplies.

The charity is also encouraging members of the public to be vigilant and visit www.streetlink.org.uk if you are concerned about someone sleeping rough in this hot weather.
