Worcester's women cyclists pedal their way to empowerment

WOMEN are pedalling their way towards empowerment in Worcester.

Bike maintenance workshop’s held by Bike Worcester’s bike recycling project, have been providing local women with essential cycling skills.

The hands-on sessions have seen 15 women gain confidence in bike repair under the guidance of a skilled female mechanic.

The first workshop focused on practical, accessible learning. Participants dismantled five donated bikes, learning how to salvage and repurpose the parts for future donated bikes.

At the next session, the focus was on applying their new skills to repair their own bikes, tackling common issues such as punctures, keeping chains clean and lubricated, and adjusting brakes.

After the first session, everyone reported feeling welcomed, supported and looking forward to returning to the workshop for another session.

Workshop facilitator Daisey Wallis said: “These workshops are about more than fixing flat tyres. It’s about demystifying bike mechanics, building self-reliance, and creating a space where women feel able to handle their own repairs.

“Seeing participants confidently tackle problems on their own bike has been rewarding for me too as I was a complete novice until I started coming to the bike recycling workshop about a year ago.”

Danny Brothwell, chair of Bike Worcester, added: “Bike Worcester plans to host more women-focused and other inclusive workshops in the future. The organisation welcomes donations of used bicycles or parts for future projects.”
