Worcester lecturer in the running to be named best in the country

THE NEW head of law at the University of Worcester has been shortlisted for the Oxford University Press Law Teacher of the Year award.

This award celebrates inspiring lecturers who demonstrate extraordinary teaching skills, passion for this subject and commitment to their students’ success.

Michelle Clarke joined the university in 2019 as senior lecturer after serving 17 years with West Mercia Police.

She said: “I think a lot of it came down to how you inspire your students beyond the classroom, and how an individual can impact a student’s journey and their future beyond simply being their lecturer.

“It’s amazing, I’m thrilled and very humbled not just for me but also the School of Law and the University.”

The university currently holds first place position in the Times Higher Education’s University Impact Rankings 2024 for quality education, which assess how universities globally are meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Michelle said she wants to use her shortlisting to empower those who don’t come from a conventional legal background, as this is not essential to excel and thrive in the world of law.

She added: “I graduated in Worcester, in the city’s cathedral more than 25 years ago, and since them I’ve had an incredibly varied career in policing and teaching.”

A goal that is reflected by the University’s position in the 10 in the UK for Gender Equality.

“The fact I went from policing Worcester to being the Head of the City’s Law School shows how diverse a career in law can truly be.”

Professor Lisa Stansbie, pro-vice chancellor, said: “We are incredibly proud to see Michelle nominated for such a prestigious award, and how an individual can impact a student’s journey and their future beyond simply being their lecturer.

“At Worcester, all of our lecturers pride themselves on the level of dedication they put into their lecturers.”
