An independent internet provider is offering free broadband to community centres across Worcestershire.
Rural broadband supplier Airband has announced it is providing the service in a bid to reduce social isolation and to help bridge the digital gap.
It comes after new research reveals that 26 per cent of Worcestershire residents rely on their community hubs for a variety of activities. Half use centres for social events, 33 per cent for recreation, 22 per cent for education classes and 15 per cent to access key services.
Over 500 venues across Airband’s network have been connected so far, and the company is asking community hub managers across Worcestershire to get in touch to register for free broadband services.
The initiative is part of the internet provider’s commitment to offer complimentary Wi-Fi to community hubs throughout its network in Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Devon.
James Hyland, head of residential for Airband, said: “As a provider focused on connecting semi-rural and hard-to-reach areas, we understand the importance community centres play in building and strengthening the cultural fabric of an area, fostering connection, and creating a sense of belonging.
“We’re proud to offer free broadband to these vital spaces, especially as crucial hubs for both digital and in-person connection.”
The research also highlighted the importance of community centres and their role in helping to combat loneliness and provide essential services in rural areas.
Notably, nearly a fifth (18 per cent) of residents surveyed visit their local hub at least once a month, with two in five (41 per cent) saying they are vital to their community.
The study also showed that 40 per cent of residents have faced loneliness, with winter being cited as a particularly tough time.
More than two in five (44 per cent) of the 1,000 adults polled believed public spaces such as these play a crucial role in supporting those struggling with isolation.
On a positive note it was found that community centres foster new friendships and activities, with 37 per cent joining community meetings, 35 per cent attending fitness classes, and others participating in social events, book clubs, charity functions, and educational programs.
