WORCESTER’S answer to the Wombles received a festive surprise from their litter-picking heroes.
Warndon Wombles, the city’s dedicated litter-picking champions, have been given a gift from the official Wombles of Wimbledon Common in the form of litter pickers, high-visibility jackets, gloves, and litter hoops to help them continue their mission of keeping Warndon Villages clean and litter free.
The Warndon Wombles Facebook group has grown to an impressive 177 members since its founding in 2020.
Each month, volunteers gather to pick up litter in the local community, inspired by the Wombles’ mantra to “make good use of bad rubbish”.
Group founder, Worcester City Councillor Sarah Murray, who recently discovered her 50 year-old copy of the Wombles hit ‘A Wombling Merry Christmas’ said: “I was a huge Wombles fan as a child and this generous gift from the Wombles is a wonderful acknowledgment of all the hard work our volunteers put in throughout the year. It’s fantastic to know that our small acts of kindness are appreciated by the original eco-warriors themselves.”
Parish councillor Dawn Merriman, who helps to run the group, added: “This recognition from the official Wombles is the perfect way to round off another amazing year for the Warndon Wombles. We’re so grateful for the community’s ongoing support, and these new tools will make a real difference to our efforts in 2025. The Wombles’ gift is not just practical—it’s a huge morale boost for everyone involved.”
And to mark the end of a successful year, the group held their final litter pick of 2024. Armed with their new gear, the Wombles spruced up the area one last time and gathered for a festive lunch at their local, the Barn Owl, before taking a well-deserved break for the holidays.
