Remade Worcester is calling on the city's future fashion designers

AN ECO-minded charity is on the lookout for Worcester’s future fashion designers.

Remade Worcester is holding costume design workshops for adults and young people, which will culminate in a fashion show and the appointment of its first Artist in Residence.

No experience is necessary to take part in Fantasia Fashion, where participants will be guided through making a costume over two Wednesday sessions on December 4 and December 11 for adults, and dates to be confirmed in January for under 18s.

Entrants will have access to the store’s extensive range of reclaimed materials and the charity’s sewing machines for the workshops. A small set charge will be made towards the costs of the costume materials.

Organisers suggest imaginative entries might include outfits inspired by fairytale characters, wizards and superheroes, mythology and Cosplay. And all the entrants will take to a Crowngate catwalk on Saturday February 8.

The Fashion Fantasia workshops will be delivered by Brenda Killigrew, founder of the Inkberrow Design Centre, and a team of helpers.

The charity’s shop manager, Beth Parmenter, said: “Brenda is a City and Guilds tutor in creative textiles, with plenty of experience helping new learners take their design ideas from sketchbook to catwalk. We are very lucky to have her as a trustee of Remade Worcester and creative director of our Fashion Fantasia. As well as dressmakers, upholsterers and fashion students, Remade’s regulars include Steam Punk enthusiasts, drag artists and historical reenactors.

“We promote a circular economy, saving quality textiles from landfill for reuse. Choosing reclaimed materials and remnants rather than buying new each time can take more skill and imagination than buying the latest colours and patterns but the results will be unique to you, more cost-effective and unique, as well as kinder to the planet.”
