Severn trent workers removed six Olympic sized swimming pools of FOG from sewers

THE EQUIVALENT of six Olympic sized swimming pools of fats, oils and greases has been collected by Severn Trent.

Each week the company pulls two and a half tonnes – the weight of a Range Rover – of wet wipes from sewers in the county.

Throughout last year 14million litres of FOG was cleared from sewers showing the ‘Be A Binner, Not A Blocker’ message has been successful.

The campaign, runs in conjunction with Environmental Compliance and Services (ECAS), Lifecycle Oils and community group Gurdwara Aid, sees fat-traps installed at the Sikh places of worship to collect the FOG, rather than it going down sinks or drains.

Grant Mitchell, sewer blockage lead at Severn Trent, said: “With the help of our Be A Binner, Not a Blocker message we have collected some 14million litres of fats, oils and greases (FOG) that may otherwise have been poured into out sewers.

“That is close to six Olympic sized swimming pools of FOG – putting us in podium position in terms of this campaign.”
