Worcester county cricketer with links to 'The Great Escape' featured in new book

A NEW book detailing a who’s who of Worcestershire cricketers, including one with links to ‘The Great Escape’ is set to be released next month by the county club’s Heritage Group Co-Ordinator, Tim Jones.

The book, titled ’61 for 1, Worcestershire’s One Championship Match Cricketers’ delves into the history of Worcestershire cricket.

It chronicles the careers and lives of the 61 players who have played just one game of Championship cricket for the county.

This latest entry follows Tim’s 2021 effort, ‘The 52, Worcestershire’s Forgotten First Class Cricketers.’

It looks into the Worcestershire cricketer who played rugby union for England, the only player to have made his first class debut during the First World War, and a player who was the prisoner of war associated with ‘The Great Escape’.

The foreword has been written by Mike Passey, Worcestershire’s youngest ever first class-Championship cricketer who recently passed away.

Tim has dedicated the book to Mike’s memory.

He said: “During my research, I uncovered other fascinating stories, found at least one picture of every player and have corrected the official records of several others.

“In two cases, I’ve found the identities of the players were completely incorrect – but the records are now right.”
