New life on the way as Worcester Peregrine Falcons lay first eggs

Worcester Editorial 20th Mar, 2024   0

NEW life is on its way in Worcester as the Cathedral’s famous Peregrine Falcons have laid three eggs- with a fourth predicted to be on the way.

People across the Faithful City have been flocking to the Cathedral’s YouTube page to watch a 24-hour live stream of the falcons visiting its nest box.

The first egg arrived last Friday morning, and the Cathedral’s Peregrine pair have since laid two more.

Cathedral experts have predicted a fourth egg could have arrived at around 7am on Friday (March 22).

The adult birds, named Peter and Peggy by Cathedral followers, have been visiting the nest box for a few weeks now and making a hollow in the gravel for nesting.

The Cathedral’s team of peregrine experts hope the chicks will hatch in late April or early May.

For the first time in over a decade, a mated pair of Peregrines moved into the Cathedral in 2022 and successfully nested, produced and fledged four chicks.

The same pair returned to the nest box last year, with the live stream of their Easter activities receiving nearly 400,000 views from across the globe.

This year’s action is also being live-streamed on a screen inside the Cathedral.

Cathedral bosses will also host a series of drop-in sessions with a team of experts, cameras and scopes to allow people to see the birds up close later in the season.

Peregrines have been in and around Worcester for hundreds of years and are depicted in the Cathedral’s great West Window and parts of the stonework.
