THE FIRST enhanced mainstream autism base for the heart of Worcester has officially opened at Christopher Whitehead Language College and Sixth Form.
Mayor of Worcester Coun Louis Stephen was on hand on Monday (January 15) to officially open The Beacon.
Invited guests included members of the Worcestershire Children’s First team, local councillors, governors and staff.
The Beacon is bespoke provision which seeks to provide students with the support to access learning, social and emotional skills. In addition it will prepare them for adulthood.
Completed in June 2023 with autistic learners in mind, its design has paid particular attention to the sensory needs of students. Among the features is calming colours within the classrooms.
A grant from Worcestershire Children’s First brought the vision to life.
The Beacon opened for students in September as an enhanced mainstream autism base, (EMAB) the first of its kind within Worcester city.
A school spokesperson said:
“It is crucial every young student with autism has the same opportunities as their peers so they can become active members of their communities.
“The Beacon seeks to be a part of this drive in Worcestershire. Places at The Beacon will be offered following consultation with the local authority.
“We will decide whether a child’s needs can be met at The Beacon, based on the provision detailed in the child’s EHCP.
No places will be offered directly.
