Santa helps keep the wheels turning for new Bike Worcester projects

Worcester Editorial 23rd Dec, 2023   0

FATHER Christmas briefly paused the countdown to Christmas at Crowngate Shopping Centre to help Bike Worcester donate recycled bikes.

The latest handover was to children at Dines Green hub, the new Bike Bus route to Honeywell Primary School.

Donated bikes refurbished at Bike Worcester’s Crowngate mean more parents and children can join the weekly ‘bus route’.

Bike Buses are a safe form of transport, encouraging healthy active lifestyles as part of a daily routine.

The scheme aims to reduce traffic and air pollution in communities and support a sustainable way of getting about.

Kimberley Price, parent volunteer for Dines Green bike bus said:

“I love seeing our children’s faces, it makes my day.

“They are the politest amazing kids you could ask for! Bike Worcester has made me feel part of the team from the start.

“If the kids have a problem with the bikes they do their best to fix it that morning.

“My daughter has cystic fibrosis so uses it as a form of physio and cycles alongside Bike Worcester volunteers.

Danny Brothwell, chair of Bike Worcester, said:

“It’s been fantastic to work with Worcester Community Trust and the local community.

“It was lots of festive fun when Santa arrived to help us distribute refurbished bikes.

“We are especially looking for donations of childrens’ bikes this Christmas.

“Huge thanks to Mike Lloyd, centre manager at Crowngate Shopping Centre for providing the space for our popular bike recycling base.

Coun Richard Udall, said:

“Bike Worcester have done even more to help Dines Green residents.

“They have ensured bikes are roadworthy, safe and maintained and supplied recycled bikes to local people at affordable prices.”

Bike Worcester is supporting a family-friendly Boxing Day ride at 10.30am. The Kidical Mass Christmas special organised family bike ride will take place on December 30.

There are now seven Bike Buses on 12 routes at primary schools across Worcester each week.

Thanks to a funding award from Worcester City Council earlier this year, Bike Worcester have been able to expand support for schools to introduce Bike Buses.

Bike Worcester work closely with schools to develop custom routes, train volunteers, provide high-vis tabards and publicity.
