A MALVERN-based charity is urging residents and businesses to support it by donating used cans – and the task is now even easier.
The Association for Rehabilitation of Communication and Oral Skills (ARCOS) launched the appeal a year ago to boost funding for its vital work with special health issues.
Well-wishers can donate cans by putting them in the large gravel sacks at the charity’s base at Hatherton Lodge, Avenue Road.
And now a special hand-operated can crusher is available for the use by the public.
ARCOS clinical director Kay Coombes said: “Now donors are free to crush the cans on site, as they take up less space.
“This means CRS of Spring Lane, who we sell them to, can haul away more cans each tine, which is a winner for everybody concerned.”
ARCOS volunteer Andy Leddington said: “It’s good for the environment, good for the charity, and it’s good exercise crushing them up.”
Pat McArvey, of Café in the Green, which has donated a large number of cans, said: “What a great way to spend a Saturday morning.”
ARCOS, based in Malvern since 1992, was set up to improve quality of life for children and adults with disrupted sensation and movement, or difficulties in communication and/or swallowing.
Many ARCOS clients have physical disabilities and some have learning difficulties.
