Worcester set to remember the fallen at Remembrance commemorations

WORCESTER and Malvern residents are being invited to remember all those who gave their lives for peace and freedom at the main Remembrance Sunday commemorations.

This year’s event on Sunday will allow people to once again pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice both in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts worldwide.

A service will take place at Worcester Cathedral from 10am with a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in the cathedral grounds beginning at 10.55am

This will include the two minutes’ silence at 11am, which will end with the firing of a gun in the cathedral grounds, followed by the playing of the Last Post.

A large number of city residents are expected to gather to witness the wreath-laying ceremony and among those laying wreaths will be Mayor of Worcester, Coun Louis StephenPeople will gather across Malvern Hills district will gather this weekend to remember those who died in the two World Wars and other conflicts.

On Saturday, November 11, there will be an Armistice Cross Laying Service at Great Malvern Priory Church at 10.40am.




Then on Remembrance Sunday, November 12, there will be a special service at Great Malvern Priory Church at 10am. This will be followed by a parade down to Great Malvern Library War Memorial for a Wreath Laying Service at 11am.

In Tenbury, the parade will assemble at the market (formerly Brightwells) at 10am before marching to St Mary’s Church where a wreath laying ceremony will take place at 11am. This will be followed by two-minute silence. After the church service, the parade retraces its route with the salute being taken by the Mayor, outside the Regal Cinema.


On Armistice Day – Saturday, November 11, the branch of the Tenbury Wells Royal British Legion organises the two minutes silence preceded by the playing of The Last Post in Teme Street, outside the Regal Cinema, at 11am.

Here’s what roads will be closed and when

A number of road closures will be in place across the county across this weekend in order for parades to go ahead.

In Malvern Wells Hanley Road will be closed between 10.45am and 12.15pm.

Malvern roads are being closed at 9.30am ready for a parade at 10.30am from outside Great Malvern Post Office Abbey Road, turning down onto Church Street, and then turning onto Graham Road into Great Malvern Library grounds via the pathway leading down to the library.

After the Wreath laying service has finished, the parade will reform and parade down Como Road to be dismissed in the car park on the right-hand side.

Church Street will be closed between 9.30am and 10.45am, Graham Road between 9.30am and 11.30am and Como Road from 9.30am to 12midday

Worcester roads affected will be High Street, from its junction with Deansway to the Guildhall, Deansway, College Yard and College Street from 10.45 to 11.15am

Other road closures include Queen Street, Pump Street, Broad Street, Friar Street, Bank Street and Copenhagen Street. Emergency access will be available at all times as usual
