WORCESTER-based Dancefest chiefs have revealed the group has secured investment from Dance Hub Birmingham to create a short-term, pop-up dance and art space in the heart of the city.
Dancefest has more than thirty years’ experience of engaging people of all ages in dance, creating innovative and inspiring events.
Dance Hub Birmingham’s Investment Programme aims to support a diverse range of projects in Birmingham and the West Midlands, and the successful bid means Dancefest will be taking over the Old Fire Station in Copenhagen Street for the next three months.
This is a trial which will give Dancefest the chance to explore ideas and consider the feasibility of a permanent dance space in the city centre.
By transforming this unoccupied site, they’ll be helping to keep the town centre vibrant and creative for people in Worcester and for those visiting the city. There will be a mix of dance classes, performances and workshops for all ages.
Dancefest is also inviting regional artists to use the space for the creation of new work and work in development.

Dancefest will be collaborating with choreographer Robby Graham, artistic director of Southpaw Dance Company, and with local community dancers to create a very special after dark outdoor dance performance using light and projection.
They’ll be inviting anyone to pop in and visit. Look out for taster sessions, open days and events, with a chance to find out what else Dancefest is planning and how you and your family can take part.
Kitty Ross, director of Dancefest, said: “This is a fantastic and incredibly exciting opportunity for Dancefest, building on our 30-year history in the region, allowing us to reach new audiences and interact with the city in new ways.
“We are very grateful for the support of Dance Hub Birmingham whose investment will allow us to experiment, test ideas, develop new partnerships and shape our future.”
Ben Roberts, director of Guthrie Roberts Ltd (GRL), who manage The Old Fire Station, said: “GRL is delighted that Dancefest has chosen to use this unique and historic space, and hope that the location helps to attract the support and attention they deserve.”
Dancefest is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation and also gratefully receives funding from Worcester Municipal Charities.
