WORCESTER City women’s football team kicking off their new campaign at Sixways has been backed by Liberal Democrats councillors.
The team announced last week that they are to move to Sixways, the former home of Worcester Warriors, after two years playing at Claines Lane.
Club chiefs hope the move will be the start of a new chapter for the club and help them to continue to build on their match attendances whilst also boosting the profile of women’s football in the area.
Worcester City Women FC CEO, Nicole Allison said: ‘“This is an incredibly exciting moment for our club, our fans, and the entire community.
“Part of our mission at WCWFC is to grow women and girls’ football in the area and attract top talent, and being at Sixways is a key part of that.
“We can grow our fan base and reach, ensure a great playing surface all year round and provide a fun, safe and engaging experience for all fans,” she added.
The move has won the support of the all-female group of Liberal Democrats at the Guildhall.
Councillor for Warndon Parish North Sarah Murray, who recently met managers at Sixways to discuss the women’s rugby team and promotion of sport for people with disabilities was full of praise for the announcement.
“I’m really happy for the WCWFC team. I know there’s a strong community in the local area and in Worcester who’d be keen to share their support and I hope this will encourage more girls to get involved in sport,” she said.
“After the disappointing events with the Worcester Warriors, it’s great to see Sixways is also trying to provide quality entertainment for the city”
Claines City and County Councillor Mel Allcott said: “I was sad at first as obviously it’s a shame the team will not be playing at Claines Lane anymore.
“However as an advert for the women’s team and women’s football in general it’s a great advertisement.
“With the Women’s World Cup under way at the moment, the game is going from strength to strength and it will be great to see how they get on. I hope we can get down for a few games.”
