WORCESTER’s Saturday Skips service will close in September as the city council bids to address a £2.5million funding gap.
Currently, skips are provided at seven city locations on a rota basis, allowing residents to dispose of large items conveniently and at no cost to them.
The service is expensive to run and the council’s Policy and Resources Committee has now agreed to close it down, in order to deliver a saving of £50,000.
In future people will be able to take their items to one of the Household Recycling Centres at Bilford Road and Horsford Road, or to book a collection with the City Council’s bulky waste service.
The final round of Saturday Skips collections will start this weekend in Weir Lane tomorrow (Saturday) then at the Farmer’s Boy on Tolladine Road next Saturday (August 5) before a visit to Shap Drive on August 12.
It will be on Liverpool Road on August 19, at the KGV playing fields on Brickfields Road on August 26 then at Dines Green Community Centre on September 2.
The service will come to an end on September 9 on Waverly Street.
In all cases, the skips will be on site from 8am to midday on each of these dates.
Lloyd Griffiths, City Council director of Operations, Homes and Communities, said: “We appreciate that this may be a disappointment to some people, however there are alternatives easily available, including booking a bulky waste collection with the City Council, signing up for our garden waste service, or taking items to a household recycling centre.”
Residents can sign up for the City Council’s bulky waste and garden waste service at www.worcester.gov.uk.
