AN ECO-CONSCIOUS electric car took to the grid following a visit to Silverstone by RGS Springfield year six students.

The project, integrated into the school’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum, allowed pupils to immerse themselves in a hands-on experience which fostered their creative thinking, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills.

Taking on various roles such as designers, engineers, and project managers, the budding enthusiasts at RGS Springfield collaborated to design, fabricate, and assemble their very own electric car.

Collaborating with the Design and Technology department at RGS Worcester, the pupils utilised computer-controlled vinyl cutting machinery to produce enchanting stickers featuring sea creatures, which adorned the car’s side panels.

Following a visit to the home of British motorsport, the inspired pupils constructed and tested their new car before the RGS Springfield Greenpower Goblin team journeyed to Renishaw New Mills for an exhilarating race day.

Joined by twenty other regional teams, the pupils competed across three race categories, putting their driving skills, car speed, and construction expertise to the ultimate test.

Each team member then had the opportunity to showcase their driving skills in a drag race or navigate a challenging slalom course before the ultimate trial – a sprint race against three other cars, with the hopes of securing a place in the semi-finals and ultimately the grand finale.

The team celebrated the exceptional performance of the car and drivers, placing fifth overall out of twenty-one teams.

RGS Springfield’s commitment to promoting STEM education and green ideas stands as a testament to their dedication in nurturing the future designers and engineers.
