Councillor calling for action to put brake on speeding

CITY COUNCIL joint leader and Labour county councillor Lynn Denham has issued a plea for County Hall to ‘get its act together’ amid a ‘sluggish’ response to demands for anti-speeding measures.

The Rainbow Hill councillor first called for a vehicle activated sign along Astwood Road in October of 2022.

After nine months, council officers attended only to identify that such a sign would not be possible. Coun Denham is now pursuing speed monitoring strips to assess the problem.

Speaking after the attendance of the council officer, Coun Denham expressed frustration at the delays.

“Residents deserve better than this. They are deeply concerned about speeding past their homes, and these concerns need to be addressed urgently,” she said.

“Unfortunately, the Tory-run county council seems to have given up on the idea of governing.

“For the safety of Astwood Road’s residents, the county council should get its act together and put anti-speeding measures in place as soon as possible.

“Delay is potentially dangerous and is also unnecessary,” Coun Denham added.

Worcestershire County Council said it had carried out a speed survey after the issue was raised by Coun Denham and would be discussing the results with her.

The busy city route Astwood Road runs from Rainbow Hill to the junction with Bilford Road near Perdiswell Leisure Centre and is flanked by hundreds of homes and the city’s main Astwood Cemetery.

A notorious accident blackspot, the route is a main artery both in and out of the city centre.
