STREET RACERS who have blighted Nunnery Way close to the KFC, including a driver clocked at 72mph on the 40mph road, have been slammed by West Mercia Police.

Officers responded to numerous calls from members of the public of offences close to the KFC restaurant in Nunnery Way on Saturday (June 3).

Once on the scene, officers witnessed numerous driving offences including an incident where a black BMW skidded off the road and crashed down an embankment.

The driver of this vehicle and three others were reported for driving offences and will receive points on their licence.

Despite the shocking scenes, officers witnessed more offences the following day (June 4), despite the street racers being deterred from gathering.

Speed detection equipment was used by officers on the 40mph stretch of road. As a result of this operation 11 further motorists will be reported for speed related offences with one vehicle captured at 72mph.

One driver, who didn’t wish to be named, told the Observer: “Something needs to be done, both for the safety of law-abiding motorists and these ‘speed racers’.

“Someone is going to be seriously injured or even worse if it’s not tackled. It’s just not worth it.

Insp Andy Tanner said: “We will continue to monitor this area, we take the issue of street racing and the illegal use of the strategic roads network very seriously and the safety of the public is at the heart of everything we do.

“I would like to reassure local residents we are listening to them, and we will respond to reports of dangerous anti-social driving on our roads.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank members of the public who assisted officers by reporting offences and remind those motorists with video evidence of motoring offences we run Operation SNAP where footage can be downloaded to enable Police to educate or prosecute motorists committing offences.” he added.
