Falklands fallen remembered as Malvern memorial bench unveiled

Worcester Editorial 6th Apr, 2023   0

MALVERN Hills District Council has unveiled a new memorial bench in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Falklands War.

The bench, installed at Malvern Library was unveiled during a dedication service on Sunday (April 2), coinciding with the commencement of the conflict.

The Rev Rod Corke dedicated the bench, which has a plaque remembering the fallen. A wreath was also laid at the Cenotaph.

Coun Martin Allen, armed forces and veterans champion and three of his fellow councillors helped raise the funds for the bench following a request from Malvern Armed Forces and Breakfast Club.

The Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club organises meet ups of veterans and armed forces personnel to combat loneliness and encourage socialising among peers.

Coun Allen said: “ I was really pleased when the Malvern Armed Forces and Breakfast Club approached me to see if I could help in funding a memorial bench.

“I was only 19 when I sailed aboard H M Submarine Valiant into the war. It was an experience of a lifetime and will always stay with me.

“Of course, we returned victorious, but with the loss of 255 comrades, I feel that the bench is a fitting way for their sacrifice to be remembered.”
