MP sees how fibre broadband is benefitting city

WORCESTER’S MP Robin Walker got a closer look at the £21million city-wide fibre broadband project after a tour of the works in Cathedral ward.

During the visit, representatives from CityFibre and build partner, Kier, introduced Mr. Walker to full fibre digital infrastructure, the best network technology currently available, and provided demonstrations of the typical build process, including excavation and reinstatement.

A full fibre connection also goes far beyond simply enabling access to the latest entertainment at lightning speed. As an essential digital utility, full fibre boosts households and businesses alike, with experts saying it will drive a range of economic benefits, such as making us more productive and innovative.

Neal Wright, area manager at CityFibre, said: “Our ambition is to bolster UK towns and cities by delivering a state-of-the-art network that will future proof their digital foundations. According to recent Hatch research, in Worcester alone, our full fibre network is expected to unlock £131million in productivity and innovation, as well as deliver a £83million increase in house value.

“Worcester was among the first projects to be announced by CityFibre, so it’s really exciting to see the network grow with more addresses going live day by day. We cannot wait to see how the city will benefit.”

Commenting on the progress of CityFibre’s project, Mr Walker said: “It was fantastic to witness the progress the CityFibre team has made to date, and to see firsthand the work that goes into modernising our city’s infrastructure.

“I welcome this investment made by CityFibre and I am looking forward to seeing how the next stages of the rollout develop, along with the wider benefits that it will bring to the local economy.”
