HOLOCAUST and wartime labour camp survivor Dr Mindu Hornick was the guest of honour as Worcester marked Holocaust Memorial Day.
Dr Hornick MBE was born in Czechoslovakia and as a young girl miraculously survived both the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and a slave labour camp in the Second World War.
She has spent the last two decades educating audiences – especially young people about the dangers of intolerance and growing levels o Islamophobia and anti-semitism in the world.
This years’ theme for the commemorations was ordinary people.
Mayor of Worcester, Coun Adrian Gregson said: “The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘ordinary people’ – the persecution of ordinary people was allowed through other ordinary people choosing to ignore what was going on around them and thus allowing so many to suffer and die in the Holocaust.
“We must all stand together, speak out against injustice and hatred, and vow that this will never be allowed to happen again.”
Tom Piotrowski, Diversity and Inclusion Manager at Platform Housing Group said: “‘Platform as the largest social provider in the region has been involved in supporting Holocaust Memorial Day for many years because we understand the relevance of it, in building tolerant and strong communities.”
